About This Program

(Advanced Program for Continuing Professional Education) This program does not include a student teaching component, and does not therefore lead to licensure, but may lead to career advancement for those already licensed as teachers. The Master of Arts in Reading Education (K-12) program is designed for current teaching professionals aiming to enhance the educational success of K-12 students through reading or literacy development and instruction. The program emphasizes collaboration and supervision, integrating the principles of the Science of Reading. Candidates focus on boosting students' reading abilities through a comprehensive process of screening, intervention, remediation, and progress monitoring. Collaboration among educators is encouraged to enhance these instructional approaches. Applicants must submit a copy of a current teaching license or demonstrate at least one year of teaching experience. The curriculum and courses of this regionally accredited program comply with the standards set by the International Literacy Association (ILA), the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), and the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). Taught by domain experts, the courses cover curriculum and instruction, cognition, emergent literacy, linguistics, phonics, and both developmental and corrective reading processes, all within the framework of the Science of Reading.
