TH 521

Devised Performance

University at Buffalo 3 credits Theatre

Course Description

In this course, we will invent, refine, and rehearse original, collaborative, ensemble-driven performance, while also training a critical eye on the processes of collaboration and creation themselves. We will examine the manifestos, ways of working, and preoccupations of other groups and companies who devise original works of performance, and consider contemporary scholarship that examines collaboration in the theater. Through on-our-feet practice and critical reflection, as well as close observation of some chosen devised works, we will create original work and navigate our own responses to the pressures and opportunities presented by devising original performance in an ensemble setting. Projects will focus not only on articulating our own aims and interests in presenting devised performance, but on the significance and implications of group authorship and co-operative participation.
