Applied Quantum Computing

Johns Hopkins University 3 credits Electrical & Computer Engineering

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to quantum computing with emphasis on applications in materials physics and device engineering. Students will learn fundamental principles of quantum information processing, quantum algorithms, and their practical implementation on current quantum computing platforms. The course bridges theoretical quantum mechanics with hands-on programming experience using industry-standard frameworks (Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane). Topics include: quantum bits and gates, quantum circuits and algorithms (Grover's, Shor's, VQE, QAOA), quantum error correction, quantum simulation of materials and molecules, quantum machine learning, and applications to electronic structure calculations, materials discovery, and optimization problems. Students will gain practical experience implementing quantum algorithms on real quantum hardware through cloud platforms and will complete a final project applying quantum computing to a problem in their research area. The course emphasizes the current state and near-term prospects of quantum computing (NISQ era) with realistic assessment of capabilities and limitations. No prior quantum computing experience required, though familiarity with quantum mechanics concepts is essential.
