The objective of this course is for students to gain experience and proficiency in reading, analyzing, critiquing, and discussing research papers in the field of gene expression, with the goal of applying the lessons learned to the conceptualization, design, performance, interpretation, and presentation of their own scientific projects. The research papers to be discussed are focused on the molecular mechanisms governing mammalian gene expression. Specific topics to be covered include: i) genome organization and its role in gene expression, ii) molecular mechanisms that underlie transcriptional activation and repression, including chromatin remodeling and histone modification, and iii) application of cutting-edge technologies (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9) to the study of gene expression. Each week, one research paper will be discussed in the class, with students taking turns to present one figure or part of it and the instructor providing clarification and/or additional questions as appropriate.
