Decarceration

Rutgers University 3 credits 601

Course Description

The dramatic growth of the U.S. prison population has earned criticism and condemnation from many corners. This seminar will explore the concept of mass incarceration, different theories on the causes of mass incarceration, and different approaches, current and aspirational, to intervene in mass incarceration—essentially, how we got here, and where we go from here. The aim of this course is to provide students with a deeper understanding of various justifications, efforts, and challenges to reducing our reliance on incarceration, an understanding that is critical to developing the knowledge and skills needed to tackle one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time.
